How to Calculate Your Roofing Labor Rate
If you are unsure how to price labor, work backward from your revenue goal:
- Decide your target revenue per crew (e.g., $300,000/year for a 3-person crew)
- Add overhead — trucks, insurance, workers comp, tools, marketing, office (e.g., $90,000)
- Total needed: $390,000
- Estimate the number of roofing squares your crew installs per year — assume 200 working days at 8 squares per day = 1,600 squares
- Minimum labor cost per square: $390,000 / 1,600 = $244/square
Round up to $275–$300/square to account for rain days, callbacks, slow seasons, and non-billable time like estimating and material runs. Add your material cost on top to get your total per-square price.
